I don’t do much end grain turning; it’s been ages since I made a batch of cups, maybe two years or more. But the hands still seem to know what to do. I went over the process yesterday because I’ve been asked to teach the basics of end grain turning on a one to one course soon. I’m looking forward to sharing the joy of this. Especially so as it’s to a returning course participant who did a bowl turning course with me a few years ago, while I was still living in the woods. I’m looking forward to catching up with him again. It always amazes me how strong the long, skinny core is when turning end grain cups. If you had a core as long and thin while bowl turning it would wobble and break. Although there are some similarities with ‘normal’ bowl turning, turning end grain is very different in many ways.
